The StarTech.com JD094BST is a 10 Gbit SFP+ transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 10 km at 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection, with digital diagnostics. It is programmed to identify as an HPE JD094B, the long-reach optic of HPE’s Comware switch families such as the 5900, 5500 and 12500, and it is a lower-cost way to add 10G uplinks between buildings on those switches. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It is coded as an HPE JD094B, the part used by HPE Comware switches (FlexNetwork / FlexFabric, formerly H3C). It is not the right coding for ArubaOS-Switch (ProCurve) or Aruba CX switches, which use J9151-series optics — for those see J9151A-ST. It is 10G only and will not link in a 1G-only SFP port, and it needs single-mode fibre. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
