The StarTech.com LOOPBACKPLUG100G is a passive QSFP28 loopback module: plugged into a 100G or 40G port, it routes the port’s own transmit signal straight back to its receive side. Network engineers use it to prove that a switch port, network card or its configuration works before blaming the optic, the fibre or the far end. In practice, a loopback plug is the quickest way to tell whether a problem sits in the switch port or further down the link: if the port comes up with the plug inserted, the port and its configuration are fine, and the fault is in the optic, the cable or the far end.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a test tool, not a transceiver: it carries no user traffic and cannot test fibre or optics, because it is an electrical loopback, not an optical one. It fits QSFP28 and QSFP+ ports; it does not fit SFP, SFP+ or SFP28 ports. StarTech.com does not publish power dissipation or attenuation figures. Not sure?
