The StarTech.com J4859CST is a Gigabit SFP transceiver reaching up to 10 km on single-mode fibre, or 1 km on multimode, at 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection, with digital diagnostics. It is programmed as an HPE J4859C, so HPE switches such as the 1820, 2520 and 2530 accept it. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It is coded as an HPE J4859C. The 10 km reach is for single-mode fibre; on multimode it drops to 1 km. It is a 1G optic and will not link to a 10G module. For ten modules, J4859C10PKST is the pack; the HPE-branded current part is the J4859D. For multimode runs inside a building, an SX optic such as the J4858CST is the usual choice. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
