The StarTech.com 2 Port USB A Female Low Profile Slot Plate Adapter, product ID USBPLATELP, brings two USB 2.0 Type-A ports out of an unused expansion slot on a small form factor PC. Most motherboards ship with more internal USB headers than the case has front-panel ports to use, and this is the standard way to reclaim them: the bracket occupies a low profile expansion slot, and a 28.5 cm cable ending in two IDC-5 female connectors plugs onto the motherboard header pins. Compatibility — check before buying:
Check three things. First the bracket height: this is a low profile plate for slim and small form factor chassis. StarTech.com does not list a full-height bracket in the package contents, so if your case takes standard-height cards, this is not the part — buy the full-height version. Second the header: the two IDC-5 female connectors are individual connector blocks, which is what lets them serve 4-pin or 5-pin motherboard USB connections as well as sitting over one row of a conventional 9-pin (2x5) internal header. Confirm your motherboard’s header pinout in its manual before fitting — USB header pinouts are not universal, and a connector placed on the wrong pins can damage the board or the device you plug in. Third, the ports are USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps: connecting them to a USB 3.0 header will not give you USB 3.0 speeds. Operating range is -20 °C to 60 °C at 30–75% RH.
