The StarTech.com ICUSB234854I is a four-port USB-to-serial hub for industrial control: four DB-9 ports, each switchable between RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485, driven by an FTDI FT4232H over one USB 2.0 cable, in an IP30 steel case that clips onto a DIN rail. It is for PLCs, drives, meters, scales and sensors that still speak serial, connected to a modern PC with no COM ports.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a serial adapter, not a USB hub: the four ports are DB-9 serial, not USB. It runs from USB bus power; a 12 V adapter is not included and is only needed if you want to supply 12 V to devices on pin 9 (5 V is available from bus power). StarTech does not publish how the RS-232/422/485 mode is selected per port or the RS-485 termination details, so check the manual for your wiring. FTDI drivers cover current and legacy Windows, Linux and macOS.

Each DB-9 port is individually configurable as RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 (2-wire or 4-wire) at up to 921.6 kbps, with 7 or 8 data bits, 1 or 2 stop bits, odd/even/mark/space/none parity and a 2 KB buffer; per-port LEDs show mode, TX and RX.
Industrial protection
15 kV Level 4 ESD protection on the ports, IP30 steel enclosure, 0–55 °C, 262,123-hour MTBF, screw-lock USB-B host port with a 2 m screw-lock cable included.
Powered devices on pin 9
Pin 9 of each port can be set to 5 V (bus power), 12 V (with an external adapter, not included) or 0 V, to power small serial devices without a separate supply.
