StarTech HB30C4AB — four 5 Gbps USB-A ports from one USB-C socket

4 x USB-A at 5 Gbps4.5 W published per portVL817 controller36 g, driver-free

The StarTech HB30C4AB is a 36 g bus-powered hub that turns a single USB-C port into four full-size USB-A sockets, each running USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5 Gbps. StarTech publishes what most makers leave out: the controller is a VIA Labs VL817 and each port is rated 4.5 W, so you can plan what to connect rather than guess. It needs no drivers on Windows, macOS, Linux or Chrome OS, and comes with a two-year manufacturer warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Compatibility — check before buying:
The host plug is USB-C only and there is no USB-A adapter in the box, so an older laptop cannot use it. The hub is bus-powered and has no DC jack at all — there is no way to add power later, so four high-draw devices, or two bus-powered 2.5-inch drives at once, will exceed what one laptop port can supply. There is no Power Delivery: it occupies the USB-C port and does not charge the notebook. The published 18.5 cm length includes the attached 14.6 cm cable. Check the code before ordering — HB30C4AIB is the industrial version and HB30CM4AB is the metal-bodied one.

Best For

✓ USB-C laptops that still use USB-A devices
✓ Mice, keyboards and wireless receivers
✓ Flash drives and card readers
✓ Travel kits where 36 g is the point
✓ Hot-desking between rooms
✓ Anyone who wants a published per-port power figure

Key Features

A published power figure per port
StarTech states 4.5 W (5 V at 900 mA) per port — the full USB 3.x allowance, and a number most manufacturers in this category simply do not print. It is the difference between planning a setup and hoping.

A named controller
The VIA Labs VL817 is published on the datasheet, which matters when you are matching a hub to a fussy device or checking driver behaviour on Linux.

Nothing to install, nothing to carry
Native operating-system drivers on Windows, macOS, Linux and Chrome OS, no software, and 36 g with the cable attached — it disappears into the laptop sleeve.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I actually run from it?
StarTech publishes 4.5 W per port — 5 V at 900 mA, the full USB 3.x allowance — but all of it comes from the single USB-C port on your computer, because the hub has no power input of its own. Keyboards, mice, receivers, flash drives and card readers are comfortably inside that. One bus-powered portable drive is usually fine; two at once is not, and there is no DC jack to add a supply later. Tell us what you plan to connect and we will check it.
Will it charge my laptop?
No. There is no Power Delivery on this hub, so it uses the USB-C port rather than passing power back through it. On a laptop with a single USB-C port you would be choosing between the hub and the charger. If that is your machine, look for a hub with a PD pass-through socket instead — tell us the model and its charger wattage and we will match one.
Which StarTech model am I likely to confuse it with?
Three. The HB30C4AB here is the standard plastic, bus-powered 4-port USB-C to USB-A hub. HB30CM4AB is the same idea in a metal enclosure. HB30C4AIB is the industrial version, built for wider temperature ranges and mounting. The codes differ by a letter or two, so order by the full part number rather than by the description.
Singular Expert Insight
StarTech charges a little more than the generic four-port hub and publishes the two numbers that justify it: the controller (VL817) and the per-port output (4.5 W). In this category most makers publish neither, which makes every purchase a guess about whether a particular drive or dongle will behave. What you are not buying is headroom — there is no DC jack, so this hub is permanently limited to what the laptop port gives it, which makes it a peripherals-and-flash-media tool rather than one for external SSDs or spinning drives. For those, a mains-powered model in our USB hub range is the right answer. The two-year warranty with lifetime technical support is unusually good cover for an accessory at this size.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

Your laptop has USB-C and you need four full-size USB-A ports back. You want published specifications — chipset and per-port wattage — rather than a spec sheet full of silence. You want 36 g and no drivers.

Skip it if

You need to run bus-powered hard drives: there is no DC jack and no way to add power. You want the hub to charge the laptop. Your machine has no USB-C port, since none of the adapters are included.

Also consider

StarTech HB30CM4AB for the same hub in a metal enclosure. A mains-powered hub if drives are involved. A USB-C hub with PD pass-through if the laptop charges over USB-C and has few ports.
