StarTech.com Panel Mount USB Cable — 90 cm, USB-B Female to Male, USB 2.0, Shielded

USB-B female to maleScrew-in mounting hoodFoil + braid shieldingLifetime warranty

The StarTech.com Panel Mount USB Cable, product ID USBPNLBFBM3, is a 90 cm (3 ft) USB-B female to USB-B male lead that brings a USB-B port buried inside an enclosure out to the front or side panel where you can reach it. The female end has a standard moulded hood designed to screw into a panel cut-out, and the male end plugs into the device inside — a single-board computer, an industrial controller, a printer, a test rig or an instrument. At 90 cm it covers a full-depth cabinet or a rack-width run, where the 30 cm version only reaches an adjacent panel. It is USB 2.0 compliant, built with 24/28 AWG conductors, aluminium-mylar foil with a braided shield and nickel-plated contacts in a PVC jacket. StarTech.com backs it with a lifetime warranty. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a USB-B to USB-B cable, which is an unusual pairing and the reason to read carefully. USB-B is the square device-side connector found on printers, scanners, audio interfaces, industrial controllers and instruments — it is not the flat USB-A on your computer. This cable does not connect a device to a PC: it extends an existing USB-B device port to a panel, where you then plug a normal USB-A-to-B cable in from the host. It is USB 2.0, so 480 Mbps is the ceiling. One practical point before you order: StarTech.com does not publish panel cut-out dimensions or screw spacing for the mounting hood, so if you are machining a panel, measure the connector in hand rather than working from a drawing. Operating range is -20 °C to 60 °C at 30–75% RH.
Key Features

Brings a buried USB-B port to the panel
The whole purpose. A controller or instrument mounted inside a cabinet has its USB-B port facing a wall of wiring. This cable relocates that port to an accessible panel face, so servicing or reprogramming does not mean opening the enclosure and reaching inside.

90 cm — reaches across a full cabinet
The length is the difference from the 30 cm version. Nine tenths of a metre routes from equipment at the back of a deep rack or the far side of a control cabinet to a panel at the front, with enough slack to dress the cable properly rather than pulling it taut across a terminal block.

Standard moulded hood for screw-in installation
The female connector uses the conventional panel-mount hood shape with fixing holes, so it fits the standard cut-out used across enclosure and equipment manufacturing rather than a proprietary bracket.

Aluminium-mylar foil with braided shielding
Two shield layers, which matters more inside a cabinet than on a desk. Panel-mount runs sit alongside contactors, drives and switch-mode supplies, and shielding is what keeps the USB link from dropping out when that equipment switches — the classic intermittent industrial fault.

24/28 AWG conductors with nickel-plated contacts
Heavier gauge on the power pair and finer gauge on the data pair, which is the standard construction for a USB 2.0 cable of this length. Nickel plating resists corrosion at the contact surface in the humid, dusty conditions enclosures often present.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this to connect a printer to my computer?
No. Both ends are USB-B, and a computer has USB-A ports. This cable relocates a USB-B port to a panel; you still need an ordinary USB-A to USB-B printer cable to run from the host to that panel connector. Think of it as an extension of the device, not a host cable.
What panel cut-out does it need?
It uses the standard-size moulded USB-B panel-mount hood, but StarTech.com does not publish the cut-out dimensions or screw spacing. If you are machining an enclosure, measure the connector physically before cutting rather than relying on a generic drawing — hood dimensions vary slightly between manufacturers.
Should I get the 30 cm or the 90 cm version?
Measure the route, not the straight-line distance. If the equipment sits directly behind the panel, 30 cm is tidier and leaves no surplus to coil. If it is at the back of a deep cabinet, on a different DIN rail, or the cable has to follow a trunking route rather than cut across, 90 cm is what you need. Surplus USB cable inside an enclosure is worse than it sounds — it picks up interference and obstructs airflow.
Why not just drill a hole and pass a normal cable through?
Because a bare cable through a hole has no strain relief and no sealing, and every tug on the external cable is transmitted straight to the connector on the board inside. A panel-mounted socket takes that mechanical load on the panel, and it lets the user unplug at the panel rather than inside the cabinet.
Singular Expert Insight
This is a build-it-yourself part rather than a consumer cable, and the mistake to avoid is buying it as a printer lead. USB-B on both ends means it is an extension of a device port, not a host connection — the pattern is: device inside the box, this cable to the panel, then a normal A-to-B cable from the outside world. Where it earns its place is in kiosks, test rigs, machine control panels and rack-mounted instruments, anywhere someone will need to plug in occasionally without opening an enclosure. At 90 cm you get enough reach to route the cable properly through trunking instead of stretching it across live terminals, which is the practical reason to choose this over the 30 cm version. Verify the panel cut-out before machining, since it is not published. Browse our docking stations range for the host-side USB ports involved, and see our laser printers section for the sort of USB-B equipment this connector serves.
Buyer's Guide

Buy it if

You are building or servicing an enclosure, kiosk, control panel or rack and need a device USB-B port brought out to an accessible panel face, with enough cable to route it properly.

Skip it if

You want to connect a printer or scanner to a computer — that needs a USB-A to USB-B cable, not this. Also skip it if your equipment uses USB-C or USB 3.0 connectors.

Also consider

The 30 cm version of this same panel mount cable where the run is short, StarTech.com USB-A to USB-B printer cables for the host-side connection, or panel mount USB-A extension cables where the port is a host port.
