The StarTech.com DRW150SATBK is a two-piece mobile rack: an aluminium frame that screws into one external 5.25-inch bay, and an aluminium caddy that the hard disk bolts into and that then slides in and out complete. StarTech rates the connector for more than 25,000 insertions and mounts the drive on rubber shock absorbers, and the key on the front does more than hold the caddy — turned clockwise it locks the drawer and powers the disk, turned back it cuts power ready for removal.

Compatibility — check before buying:
You need a free external 5.25-inch bay, which many current cases no longer have. This rack takes 3.5-inch SATA drives only — SAS is not supported, and a 2.5-inch drive would need a converter that is not included. No drive is included. The disk is screwed into the caddy with the supplied screw kit — it is not a tray-less push-in design. A SATA data cable is supplied, but no power cable is: the rack takes a 15-pin SATA or a 4-pin Molex lead from your power supply. StarTech does not publish a maximum drive height for this model.

The key switches the power, not just the lock
Turn the key clockwise and the drawer locks and the drive powers up; turn it back and the disk stops, ready to be pulled. Nobody spins up the drive without the key, and nobody yanks a running disk out by accident.
 
Aluminium, shock-mounted, 25,000+ insertions
Both the bay frame and the caddy are heavy-duty aluminium, the drive sits on rubber shock absorbers, and StarTech rates the connector at more than 25,000 insertions with a 30,000-hour MTBF. This is built for a disk that gets moved, not one that sits still for five years.
 
A fan where the drive needs it
A 40 mm ball-bearing fan sits in the drawer, and two LEDs on the front show power in green and drive activity in yellow. A 3.5-inch disk running all day in a sealed bay is a warm disk, and this is one of the few single-drive racks in its class that cools actively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a SAS drive supported?
No. StarTech lists SATA 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 Gb/s only for this model. A SAS disk will not connect. If your drives are SAS, tell us and we will point you at a rack built for them.
Does the drive just slide in, or do I have to screw it down?
It screws into the caddy, using the supplied screw kit. That is the trade-off for the rugged construction and the shock mounting. Once the disk is in the caddy, swapping the caddy in and out is instant — the screwdriver is only needed the first time.
What cable do I still need to buy?
A power lead. StarTech supplies the SATA data cable but not the power cable; the rack accepts either a 15-pin SATA or a 4-pin Molex connector from your power supply, and most supplies already have one spare. Tell us your machine and we will check.
Can I buy a second caddy so I can rotate drives?
Yes — StarTech sells the caddy on its own as 150CADSBK. Be careful when ordering: 150CADSBK is the caddy alone with no bay frame, so it is a spare, not a replacement for this product. Tell us how many you need and we will add them.

What separates this from a plain mobile rack is that it is built around the disk leaving the machine. Aluminium on both halves, rubber shock mounts, a 25,000-insertion connector and a key that cuts drive power rather than merely holding a door — those four together are why it costs more than a basic tray. If your disks stay in the machine and you simply want quicker access, a tray-less rack such as the ICY BOX IB-168SK-B is faster and cheaper because nothing screws to the drive. And if you need several disks rather than one, the multi-bay cages are the better use of the bays. Note the one real limitation: SATA only, 3.5-inch only. Choose the disk from our desktop and laptop hard drives or NAS hard drives.

You move 3.5-inch SATA disks in and out of a machine and want them protected: aluminium, shock-mounted, actively cooled, and powered only when the key is turned.

Your drives are SAS or 2.5-inch, your case has no external 5.25-inch bay, or you want bare drives to push in without screws — a tray-less rack suits that better.
