StarTech.com SWS100 — ESD Anti-Static Wrist Strap with Grounding Cord

ESD protection1.8 m cordElastic bandBlue

The StarTech.com SWS100 is an anti-static (ESD) wrist strap for anyone who opens a computer. You wear the elastic band on your wrist and clip the 6 ft (1.8 m) grounding cord to a grounded metal point, so any static charge your body builds up drains away before it can reach a component. That matters because a static discharge you cannot even feel can damage memory modules, CPUs, graphics cards, SSDs and network cards — sometimes immediately, sometimes as a hidden fault that shows up weeks later. The band is made of static-dissipative material, the cord gives you room to move around a desktop, server or workbench, and the whole strap weighs 40 g, so it lives in any toolbox or laptop bag. StarTech.com states that it is designed to exceed IBM and US military static-control standards.

Compatibility — check before buying:
How to use it — check before buying: the strap only protects you when the cord is clipped to a real ground — an unpainted metal part of a PC case that is connected to a grounded mains socket (switched off at the device), or an ESD mat or grounding point on a workbench. Clipped to nothing, it does nothing. A grounding point or mat is not included. Wear the band snugly against bare skin, not over a sleeve. StarTech.com does not publish the resistor value or clip type. Planning a workshop or service desk? Tell us and we suggest the rest of the ESD kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I clip the cord?
To a grounded metal point: an unpainted part of the PC case while it is plugged into a grounded socket and switched off, or the grounding point of an ESD mat or workbench.
Do I really need one?
Static you cannot feel can still damage memory, CPUs and cards. A wrist strap is the simplest protection when you work inside a PC.
Does one size fit all?
The band is elastic and fits most wrists. It should sit snugly against the skin.
Is a grounding mat included?
No. Only the wrist strap with its cord is in the box.
Singular Expert Insight
We suggest keeping an SWS100 with every PC toolkit — it costs far less than one damaged memory module or graphics card. When you are upgrading, browse our memory and network cards. Local support in Cyprus comes with every order.
