StarTech.com 5G2A1SGBB-USB-C-HUB — USB-C Hub with Gigabit Ethernet, RS-232 and 100W PD Pass-Through
Gigabit RJ45 + DB-9 serial2x USB-A 5 Gbps100W PD in, up to 85W to laptopWorks on USB-C and USB-A hosts
The StarTech.com 5G2A1SGBB-USB-C-HUB is a field engineer’s hub: a Gigabit Ethernet port, a proper DB-9 RS-232 serial port and two USB-A ports on a 60 cm USB-C cable, with a tethered USB-C-to-USB-A adapter so the same hub works on an older laptop. It is for anyone who configures switches, PLCs, UPS units or lab instruments over serial and needs a wired network on a laptop that has neither.
Compatibility — check before buying:
There is no video output on this hub. Laptop charging works only through a USB-C host with your own USB-C PD charger (up to 100 W in, up to 85 W to the laptop); StarTech makes no charging claim when the hub is used through the USB-A adapter. The serial port is a DB-9 male using an FTDI FT232RL chip with COM port retention, up to 115.2 kbps; for RS-422 or RS-485 you need a different adapter. StarTech lists Windows, macOS and Linux; ChromeOS and iPadOS are not listed.
Best For
✓ Network engineers consoling into switches and routers
✓ Industrial technicians talking to PLCs and instruments
✓ UPS, printer and POS maintenance over serial
✓ Laptops without an Ethernet port on site
✓ Docking a thin laptop at a bench with wired network
✓ Older USB-A laptops thanks to the tethered adapter
Key Features
Real serial port
A DB-9 RS-232 port driven by an FTDI FT232RL: up to 115.2 kbps, 7/8 data bits, 1/2 stop bits, all parity modes, 256-byte FIFO and COM port retention so the port number stays put between sessions.
Gigabit network
An ASIX AX88179A Gigabit Ethernet controller with Wake-on-LAN, jumbo frames, VLAN tagging and MAC address pass-through via StarTech’s Connectivity Tools.
USB-A and pass-through power
Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports at 5 Gbps plus a USB-C PD 3.0 input: plug your charger in and the laptop still charges at up to 85 W through the hub’s USB-C cable.

Singular Expert Insight
If your day involves console cables, this hub replaces the USB-serial dongle and the USB-Ethernet dongle with one tidy unit that also feeds the laptop’s charger through. For a desk hub without the serial port, the HB31C3A1CS or HB31C3A1CDPPD3 give more USB at 10 Gbps. Configure one of our network switches from it, and keep the rest of our USB hubs for the desk. Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You need Gigabit Ethernet and an RS-232 serial port on a laptop, want two USB-A ports on the side, and have your own USB-C PD charger for pass-through.
Skip it if
You need video output, RS-422/485, or a hub for a Chromebook or iPad. No monitor port, RS-232 only, and the OS list is Windows, macOS and Linux.
Also consider
HB31C3A1CDPPD3 for video plus 10 Gbps ports; a standalone USB-serial cable if Ethernet is already covered.
