The Supermicro MCP-220-83601-0B is the black dummy tray for the floppy-size front bay of Supermicro chassis, and it does two jobs at once. It closes off the empty FDD opening so the chassis front is finished and the airflow path is not short-circuited, and it carries rails that let a single slim 2.5-inch hard disk live inside it. That is a useful place for a boot drive or a small utility disk in a chassis whose hot-swap bays are all committed to the array. Supermicro’s own support documentation is explicit about the limit: the supplied rails fit one 9.5 mm slim 2.5-inch hard drive and nothing thicker.

Two cautions before ordering. First, the part number: MCP-220-83601-0B is this dummy tray, while MCP-210-83601-0B is the black front bezel assembly for SC836 and SC837 chassis — one digit apart, completely different parts, and the bezel is the one that appears on current chassis pages. Second, drive height: Supermicro states the rails take a 9.5 mm slim 2.5-inch drive; a 12.5 mm or 15 mm drive will not fit. Supermicro publishes no complete chassis compatibility list for this tray, and it is a legacy part that current SC836 chassis pages no longer carry in their optional-parts tables — the 836 in the part number and Supermicro’s own support FAQ place it with the 3U SC836 family. This position is not hot-swap: the FDD bay is a fixed mount with no backplane, so the drive is cabled directly and the server must be powered down to change it.
