The TP-Link MC220L is a Gigabit media converter that links a 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 copper port to a hot-swappable 1000Base-X SFP slot, so the SFP module you fit decides whether the fibre is multimode or single-mode and how far it reaches.
It supports 1000Base-SX and 1000Base-LX modules, auto-negotiates full/half duplex on copper, and runs standalone or in the TP-Link MC1400 rack chassis.
Before you order: no SFP module is included. Fit a 1000Base-SX (multimode) or 1000Base-LX (single-mode) SFP that matches your fibre and the far end.

What It Means in Practice
- Copper side: 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 with auto-MDI/MDIX, up to 100 m over Cat5/5e. Fibre side: the SFP module you choose plus its patch cord (usually LC duplex).
- At the far end you need a device with the same kind of optic: a second converter or a switch SFP port with a matching 1000BASE-X module (same fibre type and wavelength).
- Maximum power draw is only 1.7 W; LEDs show power and link/activity.
- It is a plug-and-play, unmanaged converter: no IP address or configuration, it simply passes Ethernet frames between copper and fibre.
What Will Not Work
- 10G SFP+ modules or 100 Mbps SFPs — the slot takes 1000Base-X Gigabit modules.
- Running without an SFP — the module is sold separately.
- Power over Ethernet — the RJ45 port neither supplies nor takes PoE power.
- VLAN, monitoring or any managed features — this is an unmanaged converter.
