TP-Link SFP+ 10G DAC Cable — 3 m, MSA universal coded

3 mSFP+ to SFP+10 GbpsMSA coded

The TP-Link TL-SM5220-3M is a 3 m SFP+-to-SFP+ direct attach copper (DAC) cable that links two 10G ports — switch to switch, switch to server network card or switch to storage — without buying two optical transceivers and a fibre patch cord.

It is coded to the open SFP+ MSA, for ports that accept standard, non-vendor-locked modules. TP-Link specifies it for 10 Gigabit Ethernet links within racks and across adjacent racks, built with silver-plated copper conductors.

Before you order: Some switches and network cards (certain Cisco, HPE/Aruba, Juniper and Intel models) only accept their own coded modules or need a setting to allow third-party ones. If yours is one of them, send us the model before ordering and we will tell you which coded version works.

What's in the Box

  • 1 × TP-Link TL-SM5220-3M SFP+ DAC cable, 3 m, with fixed SFP+ plugs on both ends

What It Means in Practice

  • 3 m is enough to reach across into an adjacent rack or along a short run of cable management.
  • No transceivers to buy: each end is a fixed SFP+ plug, so one cable replaces two short-range optics plus a fibre patch cord — less cost and lower latency on short links.
  • Plug it into the SFP+ cage at each end; the link comes up at 10G when both ports support that speed.
  • Copper twinax is thicker and stiffer than fibre — leave a gentle loop at the port instead of folding it sharply against the cage.

What Will Not Work

  • RJ45 / 10GBASE-T copper ports — a DAC needs a SFP+ cage at both ends.
  • QSFP+/QSFP28 ports — this cable has SFP+ plugs and does not fit 40/100G ports without an adapter.
  • Runs longer than 3 m — the length is fixed; for longer distances use SFP+ optics and fibre.
  • 1G-only SFP ports — many of them do not link with a 10G DAC; check with us first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use it between a switch and a server network card?
Yes, as long as both have SFP+ ports and the card accepts MSA-coded modules. Some cards (for example Intel X520/X710 families) only accept modules they recognise — send us the card model and we check it.
DAC or fibre — which should I choose?
For links inside a rack or to the next rack, a DAC is cheaper and simpler. Choose SFP+ optics with fibre for longer runs, for links between rooms, or where thinner cable matters.
Do I need to configure anything?
Normally no. Most switches detect the DAC and bring up the link automatically. On switches that block third-party modules, the coding has to match — see the note at the top of this page.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
A DAC is the most economical way to connect 10G equipment that sits close together. The two decisions are length and coding: measure the real cable path (not the straight-line distance) and match the coding to the switch brand. Browse our switches if you are planning the rest of the link.
✓ Buy it if you are connecting two SFP+ ports up to 3 m apart on equipment that accepts MSA modules.
✕ Skip it if your ports are RJ45, your run is longer than 3 m, or your switch only accepts its own vendor-coded modules.
→ Also consider TP-Link TL-SM5220-1M (1 m) for links inside one rack, or SFP+ optics with fibre for longer links.
Not sure which coding or length you need? Send us the switch and network card models and we will check compatibility before you order.
