The TP-Link SM311LS (TL-SM311LS) is a 1000BASE-LX Gigabit SFP (mini-GBIC) module for single-mode 9/125 µm fibre at 1310 nm, with a duplex LC port, made to extend Gigabit links from TP-Link and Omada managed or smart switches across buildings and campuses.

It is hot-pluggable, compatible with the SFP Multi-Source Agreement and supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), so the switch can show the module's temperature, voltage and optical power.

Before you order: Reach depends on the hardware version: TP-Link rates the current V5.20 module at up to 20 km on 9/125 µm SMF, while earlier versions were listed at 10 km. Plan for 10 km unless the label on your unit shows V5.x. Both ends need a 1000BASE-LX (1310 nm) single-mode module.

What It Means in Practice

  • Typical use: a Gigabit uplink between two buildings, or between a core switch and a remote cabinet, over single-mode fibre.
  • Connect it with an OS2 single-mode duplex LC patch cable (UPC); a pair of SM311LS modules, one at each end, makes a complete link.
  • DDM shows received optical power in the switch interface, which helps confirm the link budget after installation.
  • Commercial temperature range 0–70 °C: for indoor racks and cabinets, not for unheated outdoor enclosures in extreme climates.

What Will Not Work

  • Multimode fibre (OM1–OM5) — this is a single-mode LX module.
  • 10 Gigabit (SFP+) links — it runs at 1.25 Gbps.
  • Far-end modules at 850 nm (SX) or BiDi single-fibre modules.
  • Switches that only accept their own vendor-coded SFPs — TP-Link designs it for its managed/smart switches.
