The TRENDnet TE100-MGBS20 is a Fast Ethernet SFP module: 100BASE-FX at 1310 nm over single-mode fibre, up to 20 km, through a duplex LC connection. It is for switches and media converters whose SFP slots run 100 Mbps optics, typically for long links to older equipment, cameras and industrial devices. It is not a Gigabit module, despite some listings describing it as 1000BASE-LX. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs more than a few hundred metres: the 9/125 µm fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a 100 Mbps module. It works only in SFP ports that support 100BASE-FX — most Gigabit SFP ports do not — and the far end must also be 100BASE-FX single-mode. It will not link to a Gigabit LX module such as the TEG-MGBS10. If you need Gigabit on single-mode fibre, the TEG-MGBS10 is the part to order. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Built for single-mode (9/125 µm) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.
