The TRENDnet TEG-10GBS10 is a 10GBASE-LR SFP+ module for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 10 km at 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection, with digital diagnostics. It is MSA compliant and draws at most 0.8 W, and connects 10G switches between buildings, floors and sites. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It is a 10G optic: it will not link in an SFP port that only runs 1G, and both ends must be 10GBASE-LR on single-mode fibre — it will not work on multimode. TRENDnet sells a certified-refurbished version under RB-TEG-10GBS10; the part here is the new module. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Built for single-mode (OS1/OS2) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.
