The TRENDnet TEG-MGBRJ is a copper SFP module that turns an SFP slot into a Gigabit RJ-45 port, reaching up to 100 m on Cat5e or Cat6 cable. It suits switches and media converters with free SFP slots, when a nearby server, NAS, camera recorder or second switch has only an RJ-45 port. In practice, a copper module is the quickest way to connect a nearby device that only has an RJ-45 port, without buying a media converter. Use fibre for anything beyond the copper reach shown in the table.
Compatibility — check before buying:
TRENDnet publishes it for Gigabit only — a device that runs at 10 or 100 Mbps will not link through it. It needs an SFP slot that accepts 1G modules; in a 10G-only SFP+ port it will not run.
