The Ubiquiti UACC-OM-QSFP28-LR4 is a 100 Gbit QSFP28 optical module of the LR4 type, carrying four wavelengths around 1300 nm over one duplex LC single-mode pair, up to 10 km. It is the long-reach 100G optic for UniFi aggregation switches, linking buildings or sites on a campus backbone. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs single-mode fibre with LC/UPC (not APC) cords, and an LR4 module at the far end — it will not link to single-lambda LR1 or FR modules or to the multimode UACC-OM-QSFP28-SR4. Ubiquiti says it fits QSFP28 and QSFP+ interfaces, but lists no 40G mode, so plan it for 100G ports. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Single-mode fibre, long reach
Built for single-mode (OS1/OS2) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.
Hot-swappable
Modules plug into a live port without shutting the switch down, so a link can be added or replaced during working hours. Seat it until it clicks and use the latch to remove it.
Plan both ends together
A link only comes up when both ends use the same standard, speed and media. Order the far-end module, the cable and any spares in one go and the link works on day one.
