USB powered8x DVD±R / DLM-DISC readyWindows + Mac

Many modern laptops, ultrabooks and netbooks ship without an internal optical drive — yet you still need to install software, burn backups, read old CDs and DVDs or rip a music collection. The Verbatim External Slimline CD/DVD Writer 53504 is a compact, USB 2.0-powered solution: just plug it into a free USB port and start burning. It supports DVD±RW, DVD±R DL, DVD-RAM and M-DISC for long-term archiving, and works on both Windows and macOS without extra drivers.

Best For
✓ Laptops without internal DVD
✓ Software install from CD/DVD
✓ Burning data and video discs
✓ Long-term M-DISC archiving
✓ Reading old optical media
✓ Travel and field work

Key Features

USB-Powered, No Adapter

M-DISC Ready
Works with M-DISC media, designed to keep important data readable for decades — ideal for irreplaceable photos, videos and documents.

Slim & Portable
Barely larger than a DVD and lightweight enough to slip into a laptop bag — built for users who burn discs on the move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it need a power adapter?
No. The 53504 is USB bus-powered — it draws power from your laptop or desktop USB 2.0 port through the same cable that carries data.
Will it work with a MacBook?
Yes. It works with macOS (10.6 Snow Leopard and later) and Windows 7/8/10/11. On modern MacBooks with USB-C only, you need a USB-A to USB-C adapter.
Can it read or write Blu-ray discs?
No — this drive supports CDs and DVDs (plus DVD-RAM and M-DISC), but not Blu-ray. For Blu-ray reading or burning, choose a Verbatim External Slimline Blu-ray Writer instead.
Does it work on USB 3.0 or USB-C ports?
Yes. USB 2.0 devices are fully backwards compatible with USB 3.0/3.2 ports, and work via standard USB-A to USB-C adapters or hubs.
Singular Expert Insight
Choose the 53504 if you have a thin laptop, ultrabook or modern desktop without an internal optical drive and you need a reliable, USB-powered DVD writer with M-DISC support for long-term archival. If you need to read or burn Blu-ray discs, pick a Verbatim External Slimline Blu-ray Writer instead. If you only ever read old DVDs and never burn anything, a cheaper DVD-ROM-only drive will save a few euros.

Buyer's Guide

Buy it if
You need a no-fuss USB-powered DVD writer that works with Windows and Mac, supports M-DISC long-life media, and fits in a laptop bag.
Skip it if
You need to read or burn Blu-ray discs (this is DVD only), or you want the faster transfer rates of a USB 3.2 Gen 1 drive over USB 2.0.
Also consider
Verbatim External Slimline Blu-ray Writer for BD-R/BD-RE support, or Verbatim 25GB BD-R media for archive-friendly Blu-ray storage.
