Verbatim PinStripe 128 GB — Retractable USB 3.2 Gen 1 Drive in Black

128 GBUSB 3.2 Gen 1Retractable, no cap7 g with a keyring loop

The Verbatim PinStripe, article 49319, is a 128 GB USB 3.2 Gen 1 flash drive in the ribbed black body Verbatim has sold for years. The connector pushes out of the housing and pulls back in, so there is no cap to lose, and there is a loop moulded into the end for a keyring. It measures 55 x 19 x 7 mm and weighs about 7 g.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Check the article number, not the picture. Verbatim sells a second 128 GB PinStripe in black under article 49071, and it is USB 2.0 — roughly ten times slower in practice. The two share a product name, a capacity, a colour and a ribbed shape, and nothing on the outside of the pack distinguishes them except the article number and the USB logo. The drive you are looking at, 49319, is the USB 3.2 Gen 1 version. Beyond that: this is a USB Type-A drive, so it needs an adapter to reach a phone or a USB-C-only laptop and none is supplied. It arrives formatted FAT32, which means no single file over 4 GB until you reformat it to exFAT. And Verbatim publishes no speed figure for this article on its current European product page, so we do not print one — if a stated MB/s number is important to your decision, choose a model that has one.

Best For

✓ Everyday carrying of documents, photographs and installers
✓ Keyring use — the loop is part of the body
✓ Anyone replacing a drive whose cap disappeared long ago
✓ Handing files between office and home machines with USB-A ports
✓ A cheap spare to keep a second copy of important files on
✓ Buyers who want a familiar, long-established Verbatim design

Key Features

Retractable PinStripe body
Push the slider and the connector emerges; pull it back and it is protected. There is no separate cap, so nothing to leave on a desk.

Keyring loop built in
The loop is moulded into the housing rather than added on, which on a 7 g drive is what keeps it from disappearing into the bottom of a bag.

USB 3.2 Gen 1
A 5 Gbps SuperSpeed link, backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports at those ports’ speeds. This is the point of difference from the older USB 2.0 PinStripe that shares its name.

Thin at 7 mm
55 x 19 x 7 mm and about 7 g. Slim enough that it will not crowd the port next to it on a laptop with tightly spaced sockets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure I get the USB 3 version and not the USB 2 one?
By the article number. This drive is 49319. Verbatim also sells article 49071, a 128 GB PinStripe that is also black, also ribbed and also called PinStripe — but it is USB 2.0. The packaging looks near identical, so the number is the only reliable check.
Why does this page not state a transfer speed?
Because Verbatim does not publish one for this article on its current European product page — we checked the page for read speed, write speed and MB/s and found none. Older Verbatim catalogues carry figures, but they are not on the live specification and we will not present a withdrawn number as current. What is certain is the interface: USB 3.2 Gen 1, which is a substantial step up from the USB 2.0 PinStripe.
Why can I not copy a large video file onto it?
It ships formatted FAT32, which cannot store a single file larger than 4 GB regardless of free space. Reformat to exFAT and the limit goes away; exFAT is readable on both Windows and macOS. Reformatting erases the drive, so do it before you load anything onto it.
Can I use it with a phone or a USB-C laptop?
Not directly — it has a full-size USB-A plug and no adapter is included. If a phone or a USB-C-only laptop is the target, tell us which and we will point you at a drive with the right connector.
Singular Expert Insight
The PinStripe is a long-running, deliberately plain design, and there is nothing wrong with that: a retractable connector and a moulded keyring loop solve the two ways flash drives usually die. What you should go in knowing is that Verbatim has stopped printing a speed for this article, which makes it hard to compare against drives that do publish one — several models in our USB flash drives range state both read and write. Two other practical points: the FAT32 formatting will block any file over 4 GB until you reformat, and Verbatim’s manufacturer term for Europe, the Middle East and Africa is two years, where Kingston, SanDisk, Transcend and Silicon Power publish five. If you plan to run software from the drive rather than just carry files, an external SSD is the right class of product.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want a plain, inexpensive 128 GB USB-A stick with a retracting connector and a keyring loop, from a brand that has been making this exact drive for a long time.

Skip it if

You need a published transfer speed to compare against other drives, you want a USB-C connector, or you need to copy files larger than 4 GB without reformatting first.

Also consider

Verbatim Store n Go V3 MAX if you want a Verbatim drive with a published speed. MediaRange MR918 for a 128 GB slider with both read and write stated. A dual USB-A and USB-C model if a phone is part of the plan.
