WD Red Pro 4TB NAS Hard Drive, 3.5-inch SATA HDD, 7200 RPM, CMR, 256MB Cache, 550TB/year Workload
WD Red Pro 4TB — 3.5-inch NAS hard drive, 7200 RPM, CMR
The WD Red Pro 4TB (WD4006FFBX) is a 3.5-inch SATA NAS hard drive with 7200 RPM, CMR recording and a 256MB cache, built for small and medium businesses running multi-bay NAS systems and RAID arrays that operate 24x7 under heavy, multi-user workloads.
Red Pro is the professional tier of the WD Red family: rated for up to 550TB/year of workload and positioned by WD for RAID-optimised NAS systems with any number of bays. This is the current 4TB model (WD4006FFBX) with 256MB cache; it replaces earlier 4TB Red Pro part numbers such as WD4005FFBX in WD's lineup.
What's in the Box
- WD Red Pro 4TB 3.5-inch SATA hard drive (bare drive)
- No SATA cable, screws or mounting rails are included — use the trays or caddies of your NAS or chassis
What It Means in Practice
- CMR (conventional magnetic recording) behaves predictably during RAID rebuilds and sustained writes — the reason NAS vendors recommend CMR drives over SMR in multi-drive arrays.
- 7200 RPM and up to 217MB/s transfer rate give faster rebuilds and multi-user access than 5400-class NAS drives, at the cost of a little more heat and noise.
- The 550TB/year workload rating covers continuous office file serving, backups from many PCs, surveillance archives and virtual machine storage.
- NASware firmware is tuned for NAS and RAID environments, so the drive cooperates with the array controller instead of dropping out during long error recovery.
- For a 4-bay NAS in RAID 5, four of these drives give about 12TB of usable space with protection against one drive failure.
What Will Not Work
- It will not fit a laptop or a 2.5-inch bay — this is a 3.5-inch drive.
- It is not an external drive: there is no USB port and it cannot be powered from USB.
- It is not an SSD and will not give SSD-level random performance for databases or boot drives — use it for capacity and sequential workloads.
- Mixing it in a RAID set with SMR drives or very different models is not recommended — build arrays from identical drives where possible.
- It does not include cables, screws or rails.
