WD Blue 2TB Desktop Hard Drive
2TBSATA 6 Gb/s7200 RPM256 MB cacheDevice-managed SMR
The WD Blue 2TB (part number WD20EZBX) is a 3.5-inch desktop hard drive spinning at 7200 RPM with a 256 MB cache and a maximum internal transfer rate of 215 MB/s over SATA 6 Gb/s. It is the fastest spindle speed in the WD Blue desktop range and is intended as general purpose secondary storage in a home or office PC.
Important, please read: Western Digital currently classifies WD20EZBX as SMR (shingled magnetic recording, device-managed) in the March 2025 revision of the WD Blue product brief and on its own product page. An earlier 2023 revision of the same Western Digital brief listed it as CMR, and many retailers still repeat that. We publish the current manufacturer classification. SMR overlaps write tracks to raise density, which means sustained rewrites can slow considerably once the drive fills, so this drive is not suitable for a NAS, a RAID array or a caching tier. If you need CMR at 2TB in the WD Blue range, the WD20EARZ is the CMR part number.
Best For
✓ General purpose desktop storage
Cheap bulk capacity for documents, photos, media and downloads alongside an SSD holding the operating system.
✓ Archive and cold storage
Data written once and read many times is exactly the workload SMR handles without penalty.
✓ Local backup targets
Scheduled backups that mostly append rather than rewrite in place suit shingled recording well.
✓ Replacement disk in an older desktop
A straightforward 3.5-inch SATA drive for a machine whose original hard drive has failed or filled up.
Key Features
7200 RPM spindle
The fastest rotational speed in the WD Blue desktop range, which shortens seek times compared with the 5400 RPM models.
256 MB cache
A large DRAM buffer for the class, which absorbs bursty writes before they reach the platters.
Up to 215 MB/s
Maximum internal transfer rate published by Western Digital for this model.
Device-managed SMR
The drive handles the shingled write mechanics internally, so no special operating system or driver support is needed. The trade is slower sustained rewrite performance once the drive is full.
300,000 load/unload cycles
Rated head park cycles for desktop-class duty.
Low acoustics
25 dBA idle and 27 dBA seek, quieter than most 7200 RPM drives.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the WD20EZBX CMR or SMR?
Western Digital currently classifies it as SMR, device-managed. That is what the March 2025 WD Blue product brief and the Western Digital product page both state. An earlier 2023 revision of the same brief said CMR, which is why many retailer listings still claim CMR. If you specifically need CMR at 2TB in this range, WD20EARZ is the CMR part.
Can I use the WD20EZBX in a NAS or a RAID array?
No, we would not recommend it. Shingled recording slows badly under sustained rewrites and during RAID rebuilds, and some NAS operating systems handle SMR drives poorly. For a NAS choose WD Red Plus, which is CMR and carries a published workload rating.
Does SMR matter for normal desktop use?
For most desktop use, no. Writing files, storing media and reading them back behaves like any other drive. The penalty appears when you rewrite large amounts of data in place on a drive that is already close to full, which is not a typical desktop pattern.
What do I need to know before buying the WD20EZBX?
It ships as a bare internal drive with no cables, screws or enclosure, it is a 3.5-inch drive so it will not fit a laptop, and it uses SMR. Western Digital does not publish a workload or MTBF rating for this consumer line, so if a specification sheet needs those figures, look at WD Red Plus or WD Gold instead.
Singular Expert Insight
This drive is worth buying with your eyes open. Western Digital reclassified WD20EZBX from CMR to SMR between brief revisions, and the older CMR claim is still all over retail listings, so it is easy to buy this expecting something it is not. As cheap secondary desktop storage or an archive disk it is perfectly good, and the 7200 RPM spindle makes it the quickest drive in the WD Blue line. As a NAS drive, a RAID member or anything that rewrites heavily, it is the wrong tool and WD Red Plus is the right one. Browse our desktop and laptop hard drives or, if the drive is destined for a NAS, our NAS hard drives.
Buyer's Guide
Buy this if
You want cheap 7200 RPM secondary storage in a desktop for media, archives and backups that are written once and read often.
Skip if
The drive is going into a NAS, a RAID array or anything that rewrites heavily. SMR is the wrong recording technology for that.
Also consider
WD20EARZ if you specifically need CMR at 2TB, WD Red Plus for a NAS, or an internal SSD for the operating system.
