WD My Passport SSD 2TB, Red — 1,050 MB/s Read, 1,000 MB/s Write, Hardware Encryption
2TB capacity1,050 MB/s read1,000 MB/s write256-bit AES hardware
The WD My Passport SSD is a 2TB pocket drive on USB 3.2 Gen 2, published at up to 1,050 MB/s read and up to 1,000 MB/s write. Part number WDBAGF0020BRD-WESN is the 2TB model in Red. What sets this line apart from a plain portable SSD is the security: password-enabled 256-bit AES hardware encryption, managed by WD’s own software, so the contents are unreadable to anyone who finds the drive. It is 100 × 55 × 9 mm and 45.7 g, shock and vibration resistant, and rated to survive a drop of nearly two metres.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Colour and capacity are both encoded in this part number, and they are the two things people get wrong. The same 2TB drive exists as Space Gray, Midnight Blue, Red, Rose Gold and Silver, and only the code ending BRD is the red one on this page. Capacity is in the digits too: 0010 is 1TB, 0020 is 2TB, and 4TB is made only in Space Gray — there is no red 4TB. Two more checks. This is the WDBAGF generation; WD also sold an older My Passport SSD (WDBKVX) at 540 MB/s with a three-year term, and a My Passport HDD, which is a mechanical drive with the same family name and a fraction of the speed. And the drive ships formatted exFAT for Windows — Mac users who want Time Machine or APFS should reformat it, which erases it, so do that before copying anything on. The box contains a USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter, so USB-A machines are covered, though a USB 2.0 port will drop the drive to around 40 MB/s. Tell us the machine and we will confirm.
Best For
✓ Carrying work that must be protected if lost
✓ Photo and video libraries on the move
✓ Machines with USB-C, and older ones via the adapter
✓ A second copy of a laptop’s working files
✓ Travel where a drive gets knocked about
✓ Anyone who wants encryption without extra software cost
Key Features
1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write
Both published for this capacity. A 10 Gbps drive that writes at essentially the same rate as it reads, which matters if you copy onto it as often as you copy off it — and unlike the 20 Gbps drives, this speed is reachable on almost any modern machine.
256-bit AES hardware encryption
Performed by the drive itself and unlocked with a password through WD Security. Hardware encryption means the protection travels with the drive rather than depending on the operating system, and it is the reason to choose this over a plain portable SSD.
Built for a bag
Shock and vibration resistant, with a published drop rating of 1.98 m — six and a half feet. There is no IP rating, so treat it as knock-resistant rather than weatherproof: it survives a fall off a desk, not a downpour.
45.7 grams, and both port types covered
100 × 55 × 9 mm and under fifty grams. The box has a USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter, so it plugs into a current laptop and an older desktop without another purchase.

Singular Expert Insight
The reason to choose a My Passport SSD over a plain portable drive is the hardware encryption, and it is worth being precise about why that matters: software encryption depends on the machine you plug into, while hardware encryption travels with the drive. For anyone carrying client files, medical or legal material, or simply a laptop’s whole working set, that turns a lost drive from a disclosure into an inconvenience. On speed, 1,050 MB/s is the sensible ceiling rather than a compromise — the 2,000 MB/s drives need a 20 Gbps port that most machines, and no Mac, actually have, so on real hardware they often perform the same as this. Where this line stops short is weather: there is no IP rating, so if the drive goes outdoors, an IP65-rated drive from our external SSD range is the better fit even at the same speed. And if 2TB is meant as a backup rather than a working copy, remember that one drive is not a backup — a desktop external hard drive at home costs a fraction per terabyte for the second copy.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You need 2TB that travels and stays private. Hardware AES-256 with a password, 1,050 MB/s in both directions, under 50 g, and both port types covered out of the box.
Skip it if
The drive will be used outdoors or anywhere wet — there is no IP rating. Skip it too if you specifically need 2,000 MB/s and have a 20 Gbps port to feed it.
Also consider
An IP65-rated portable SSD if the drive goes outside. A 20 Gbps drive if your machine genuinely has that port. A desktop external hard drive as the cheap second copy.
