WD My Passport 6TB External Hard Drive
6TBUSB 3.2 Gen 1Portable 2.5-inchBus-poweredblue
The WD My Passport 6TB (part number WDBR9S0060BBL) is a portable 2.5-inch external hard drive connecting over USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5 Gb/s. It is a portable 2.5-inch drive that draws all its power from the USB cable, so there is no mains adapter to carry, and it includes password protection with hardware encryption. At 107 by 75 by 21 mm and 0.21 kg it fits a jacket pocket.
Before you buy: this is a mechanical 2.5-inch drive, not an SSD. It is quiet and light but it is not shock-proof, so treat it gently in a bag and do not move it while it is writing. The drive connects with the supplied USB Type-A to Micro-B cable; if your computer only has USB-C ports you will need an adapter or a USB-C to Micro-B cable, which is not included. It is bus-powered, so the single USB cable carries both data and power and there is no mains adapter to find a socket for.
Best For
✓ Carrying large files between machines
6TB in a pocket-sized bus-powered enclosure, with no adapter to remember.
✓ Laptop backups on the move
Password protection with hardware encryption means a lost drive does not mean lost data.
✓ Photo and video offload in the field
Enough capacity for long shoots without the cost per terabyte of an external SSD.
✓ Secondary copies of important files
A cheap way to keep an offline copy of anything you cannot afford to lose to a failed computer or ransomware.
Key Features
6TB bus-powered
One of the largest capacities available in a portable drive that runs entirely from the USB cable.
Password protection with hardware encryption
The encryption runs on the drive itself, so it does not slow down the host computer.
Pocket sized
107.2 by 75.0 by 20.6 mm and 0.21 kg, small enough for a jacket pocket or a laptop sleeve.
USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5 Gb/s
Backward compatible with USB 2.0, so it works with older machines at lower speed.
Finished in blue
One of several colour options in this generation of My Passport; this part number is the blue version.
No mains adapter needed
A single cable carries both data and power, so there is nothing else to pack.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the WDBR9S0060BBL work with a Mac?
Yes, although it ships formatted for Windows. Reformatting to APFS or Mac OS Extended in Disk Utility takes a minute and erases the contents. To use it with both Windows and macOS without extra software, format it exFAT.
Does it need a power adapter?
No. It is bus-powered, so the single USB cable carries both data and power. Only the larger desktop My Book requires a mains adapter.
Is a My Passport fast enough for video editing?
For offloading and archiving footage, yes. For editing a timeline directly off the drive, a mechanical portable drive will feel slow and an external SSD is the better tool. Western Digital does not publish a transfer rate for this model; the 5 Gb/s figure is the USB link speed, not the drive speed.
What do I need to know before buying the WDBR9S0060BBL?
It arrives formatted for immediate use but you may want to reformat it for your operating system, which erases the contents. It is bus-powered from the USB cable. A single external drive is not a backup strategy on its own; keep a second copy of anything irreplaceable.
Singular Expert Insight
The reason to buy a portable mechanical drive in 2026 is capacity per euro, and at 6TB that argument is strong: an external SSD of the same size costs several times more. What you give up is speed and shock resistance, so treat this as an archive and transfer drive rather than a working disk. Turn the password protection on from the start, because a pocket-sized drive is exactly the kind that goes missing. See our full range of external hard drives or, if speed matters more than capacity per euro, our external SSDs.
Buyer's Guide
Buy this if
You want the most portable capacity per euro, with encryption built in, and you do not need SSD speed.
Skip if
You will edit video or run applications from the drive, or it will get knocked about. An external SSD is faster and far more robust.
Also consider
WD My Book for a larger desk-bound drive, an external SSD for speed and durability, or WD_BLACK P10 if it is for a games console.
