WD My Passport for Mac 5TB External Hard Drive
5TBUSB 3.2 Gen 1Portable 2.5-inchBus-poweredPreformatted HFS+
The WD My Passport for Mac 5TB (part number WDBA2F0050BBL) is a portable 2.5-inch external hard drive connecting over USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5 Gb/s. It ships preformatted HFS+ so it works with macOS out of the box, is bus-powered from the USB cable, and includes password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption plus Acronis True Image backup software.
Before you buy: this drive is preformatted HFS+ for macOS. Using it on Windows requires a downloadable HFS+ driver or reformatting, which erases the contents. It is a mechanical 2.5-inch drive rather than an SSD, so treat it gently and do not move it while it is writing. The drive connects with the supplied USB Type-A to Micro-B cable, and a USB-A to USB-C adapter is included for Macs without a Type-A port. Note that despite being aimed at Mac users the port on the drive itself is Micro-B, not USB-C. The My Passport Ultra is the model with a genuine USB-C port. It is bus-powered, so the single USB cable carries both data and power and there is no mains adapter to find a socket for.
Best For
✓ Mac backups and Time Machine
Preformatted HFS+ means macOS recognises it immediately with no reformatting step.
✓ Carrying large files between Macs
Bus-powered and pocket-sized at 107 by 75 by 19.2 mm, with no adapter to remember.
✓ Encrypted portable storage
256-bit AES hardware encryption with password protection, so a lost drive does not mean lost data.
✓ Photo and video archives
Enough capacity for large libraries at a fraction of the cost per terabyte of an external SSD.
Key Features
5TB bus-powered
Runs entirely from the USB cable, so there is no mains adapter to pack.
Preformatted HFS+
Ready for macOS out of the box, unlike the Windows-formatted My Passport models.
256-bit AES hardware encryption
Encryption runs on the drive itself rather than in software, so it does not slow down the Mac.
USB-C adapter included
A USB-A to USB-C adapter is in the box for Macs with only Type-C ports.
Acronis True Image for Western Digital
Bundled backup software with ransomware protection, licensed for use with the drive.
Slim 19.2 mm profile
Thinner than the 6TB model in the same family, which measures 20.6 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the WDBA2F0050BBL work with Windows?
Not out of the box. It is preformatted HFS+, which Windows cannot read without a third-party driver. You can reformat it to NTFS or exFAT in Windows, which erases the contents. If you need it to work on both, format it exFAT.
Does the WDBA2F0050BBL have a USB-C port?
No, and this is the most commonly mis-stated fact about this model. The port on the drive is Micro-B and the supplied cable is USB-A to Micro-B. A USB-A to USB-C adapter is included in the box. If you want a drive with a genuine USB-C port, the My Passport Ultra is the one to buy.
Does it work with Time Machine?
Yes. Because it arrives preformatted HFS+, macOS will offer it as a Time Machine destination as soon as you plug it in. If you have already reformatted it to exFAT, macOS will ask to reformat it before using it for Time Machine.
What do I need to know before buying the WDBA2F0050BBL?
It arrives formatted for immediate use but you may want to reformat it for your operating system, which erases the contents. It is bus-powered from the USB cable. A single external drive is not a backup strategy on its own; keep a second copy of anything irreplaceable.
Singular Expert Insight
The reason to buy this over the standard My Passport is the HFS+ preformatting and the Mac-oriented bundle, which saves a reformatting step and nothing more; the hardware is the same class of 2.5-inch mechanical drive. The thing to be clear about is the connector, since the Mac branding leads people to expect USB-C and the port is actually Micro-B with an adapter in the box. Turn the encryption on from the start, because a pocket-sized drive is exactly the kind that goes missing. Buyer's Guide
Buy this if
You want a portable, encrypted, Mac-ready drive at the lowest cost per terabyte and you do not need SSD speed.
Skip if
You mainly use Windows, or you will edit video directly from the drive. A Windows-formatted My Passport or an external SSD fits better.
Also consider
WD My Passport Ultra for a genuine USB-C port and a metal finish, WD My Book for a larger desk-bound drive, or an external SSD for speed.
