WD My Passport Ultra 4TB External Hard Drive
4TBUSB 3.2 Gen 1Portable 2.5-inchBus-poweredUSB-C, metal top
The WD My Passport Ultra 4TB (part number WDBFTM0040BBL) is a portable 2.5-inch external hard drive connecting over USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5 Gb/s. It is the metal-topped model in the My Passport family and the one with a genuine USB-C port, shipping with a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter. It is bus-powered and includes password protection with hardware encryption plus Acronis True Image backup software. Western Digital states the enclosure uses over 50 percent recycled plastic under the metal cover.
Before you buy: this is the only My Passport variant with a real USB-C port on the drive; the standard My Passport and the My Passport for Mac both use Micro-B with an adapter. It is a mechanical 2.5-inch drive rather than an SSD, so treat it gently and do not move it while it is writing. It is formatted for Windows, and writing to it from macOS needs a downloadable NTFS driver or reformatting. The drive has a genuine USB-C port and ships with a USB-C to USB-C cable plus a USB-C to USB-A adapter, so it connects to both modern and older machines without buying anything extra. It is bus-powered, so the single USB cable carries both data and power and there is no mains adapter to find a socket for.
Best For
✓ Modern laptops with USB-C only
A genuine USB-C port and a USB-C to USB-C cable in the box, with a USB-A adapter for older machines.
✓ Carrying large files between machines
Bus-powered and 110 by 82 by 21 mm, so it travels with a single cable.
✓ Encrypted portable storage
Password protection with hardware encryption, so a lost drive does not mean lost data.
✓ Users who want a durable finish
A metal top rather than the plain plastic of the standard My Passport.
Key Features
Genuine USB-C port
The only My Passport variant with USB-C on the drive itself rather than Micro-B plus an adapter.
Both cables covered
USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter are both in the box.
4TB bus-powered
Runs entirely from the USB cable, so there is no mains adapter to pack.
Metal top design
A metal cover for added durability, over an enclosure Western Digital states is more than 50 percent recycled plastic.
Hardware encryption with password protection
Encryption runs on the drive itself, so it does not slow down the host computer.
Acronis True Image for Western Digital
Bundled backup software with ransomware protection, licensed for use with the drive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the WDBFTM0040BBL work with a Mac?
It connects fine over USB-C, but it arrives formatted for Windows. To write to it from macOS you either install the downloadable NTFS driver Western Digital provides or reformat it, which erases the contents. If you want a Mac-ready drive out of the box, the My Passport for Mac is preformatted HFS+.
What cable comes with the WDBFTM0040BBL?
A SuperSpeed USB-C to USB-C cable rated at 5 Gbps, plus a USB-C to USB-A adapter. That covers both a modern laptop with only Type-C ports and an older machine with Type-A.
What is the difference between My Passport Ultra and the standard My Passport?
The Ultra has a genuine USB-C port, a metal top and a USB-C to USB-C cable. The standard My Passport uses a Micro-B port with a USB-A cable and a plastic enclosure. Capacity, speed class and encryption are comparable.
What do I need to know before buying the WDBFTM0040BBL?
It arrives formatted for immediate use but you may want to reformat it for your operating system, which erases the contents. It is bus-powered from the USB cable. A single external drive is not a backup strategy on its own; keep a second copy of anything irreplaceable.
Singular Expert Insight
The Ultra is worth the premium over the standard My Passport for one practical reason: the USB-C port. Every other drive in the family, including the Mac-branded one, uses Micro-B and reaches USB-C only through an adapter, which is one more small thing to lose. The metal top is a genuine improvement in feel and durability, though the underlying mechanism is the same class of 2.5-inch drive, so this is still an archive and transfer drive rather than a working disk.
