WD Purple Pro 22TB — Enterprise-Class Storage for AI Surveillance Systems
22TB CMR · Helium550TB/yr Workload64 Cameras + 32 AI Streams5-Year Warranty
The WD Purple Pro 22TB is an enterprise-class 3.5-inch SATA surveillance hard drive engineered for 24/7 smart-video duty in high-end NVRs, video analytics appliances, deep-learning servers and RAID/JBOD storage. Part number WD221PURP, it combines helium-sealed CMR recording with OptiNAND technology, a 7,200 RPM spindle, 512MB cache and sustained transfers up to 265MB/s — rated for a 550TB/year workload, 2.5-million-hour MTBF and support for up to 64 single-stream HD cameras plus 32 concurrent AI streams via WD's AllFrame AI firmware. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.
Compatibility note: This is an internal 3.5" SATA drive for NVRs, surveillance servers and multi-bay enclosures — it is not an external/USB product. RV sensors and tarnish-resistant components make it suitable for dense multi-bay systems with no drive-bay limit. Confirm your recorder supports 22TB volumes before ordering.
Best For
✓ Large multi-camera CCTV/NVR installations
✓ AI video analytics & deep-learning appliances
✓ Long retention periods — weeks of 4K footage
✓ RAID/JBOD surveillance storage arrays
✓ Harsh sites — tarnish-resistant build, 0–65°C
✓ Integrators standardising on one big SKU
Key Features
Built for 24/7 Recording, Not Office Duty
A 550TB/year workload rating, 2.5-million-hour MTBF and 600,000 load/unload cycles put this in enterprise territory — desktop drives are typically rated for a fraction of this and fail early under constant surveillance writes.
AllFrame AI — 64 Cameras, 32 AI Streams
WD's AllFrame AI firmware improves ATA streaming to reduce dropped frames across up to 64 single-stream HD cameras, while supporting 32 concurrent AI streams for on-box deep-learning analytics — ready for modern smart cameras that transmit multiple streams.
Helium + CMR + OptiNAND at 22TB
Helium sealing enables 22TB with lower power and heat; conventional magnetic recording (CMR) keeps sustained write performance predictable — critical for video — and OptiNAND technology boosts capacity and reliability.
Multi-Bay Ready
Rotational-vibration sensors compensate for neighbouring drives in dense enclosures, tarnish-resistant components survive harsh environments, and WD imposes no drive-bay limit — backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

Singular Expert Insight
For installers, the maths usually favours fewer, bigger Purple Pro drives: one 22TB unit replaces three smaller disks, freeing bays, halving power draw per terabyte and simplifying RAID layouts. The Pro tier earns its premium specifically when recorders run analytics or more than a handful of 4K cameras — for a home 4–8 camera NVR, a standard WD Purple 4–8TB does the job for much less. One sizing rule of thumb: a 4K H.265 camera at 25fps consumes roughly 1TB per camera per month of continuous recording, so 22TB ≈ a month of retention for ~20 such cameras.
Buyer's Guide
Buy it if
You run a large or AI-enabled surveillance system — many 4K cameras, analytics appliances or RAID arrays — and need maximum retention with enterprise reliability (550TB/yr, 5-year warranty).
Skip it if
You have a small home NVR with a handful of cameras — a standard WD Purple costs far less — or you need general NAS/desktop storage, where Red Pro or Black/Blue are the matching lines.
Also consider
WD Purple Pro 18TB (WD181PURP) or 12TB (WD122PURP) to match your retention needs, or standard WD Purple 8TB for smaller installations.
