SanDisk DC SN861 1.92TB — U.2 PCIe Gen5 NVMe, 13,700 MB/s Read, 2.1M IOPS

13,700 MB/s read2.1M random read IOPSPCIe Gen5 x4, NVMe 2.01 DWPD, ISE

The SanDisk DC SN861 is a PCIe Gen5 data-centre NVMe SSD in the U.2 form factor, and part number 0TS2525 is the 1.92TB ISE model. SanDisk publishes up to 13,700 MB/s sequential read and 3,600 MB/s sequential write, with 2,100,000 random read and 165,000 random write IOPS, at 1 drive write per day — a read-intensive class drive. It is rated at 2.5 million hours MTTF with a 0.35% annualised failure rate and a UBER of 1 in 10¹⁷, and its power draw is selectable between 12 and 20 W so it can be tuned to the chassis it goes into.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Check the fit, the slot and the security letter — all three are easy to get wrong. First, U.2 is not SATA or SAS. This drive needs a U.2 or U.3 NVMe backplane, or a PCIe adapter; it will not run in a SAS or SATA bay. Second, it is 15 mm thick and draws up to 20 W by default, so it needs a 15 mm bay and enterprise airflow — not a 7 mm laptop slot and not a quiet desktop. On a Gen4 backplane it works but is throttled well below 13,700 MB/s. Third, and this is the one that causes returns: 0TS2516, 0TS2525 and 0TS2528 are the same 1.92TB drive with different security firmware. This part, 0TS2525, is the ISE model — Instant Secure Erase. If your requirement is TCG Opal self-encryption, the part is 0TS2528, and a drive cannot be converted after the fact. One more note for catalogues: this product was sold as the Western Digital Ultrastar DC SN861 before the brand transition — same drive, current brand is SanDisk. Tell us the server model and the security requirement and we will confirm the part before you order.

Best For

✓ Gen5 servers with a U.2 or U.3 backplane
✓ Read-intensive databases and content delivery
✓ AI and analytics nodes feeding data to GPUs
✓ Virtualisation hosts needing high random read
✓ Chassis where power draw must be capped
✓ Fleets that need instant secure erase on retirement

Key Features

13,700 MB/s read and 2.1 million random read IOPS
PCIe Gen5 x4 with NVMe 2.0. The random read figure is what matters for most server workloads — 2.1 million IOPS against roughly 94,000 from an enterprise SATA drive is a change of category, not a percentage improvement.

Selectable power, 12 to 20 W
SanDisk publishes a selectable power envelope of 12, 14, 16, 18 or 20 W, with 20 W as the default. That matters when a chassis has a per-slot power budget or limited airflow: you can trade some throughput for a drive that stays within what the enclosure can cool.

Reliability figures published in full
2.5 million hours MTTF, a 0.35% annualised failure rate and a UBER of 1 in 10¹⁷. Publishing AFR alongside MTTF is unusual and it is the more useful of the two for anyone sizing a fleet.

ISE — instant secure erase
This part is the ISE model, which lets the drive be cryptographically erased in seconds at end of life rather than physically destroyed. Note it is not the TCG Opal self-encrypting variant — that is a different part number in the same family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a Toshiba drive?
No — and this is worth clearing up, because the bare numeric code looks like a Toshiba part. The 0TS prefix is Western Digital and SanDisk SKU numbering, and the EAN on this product confirms a SanDisk allocation. It is the SanDisk DC SN861, previously sold under the Western Digital Ultrastar brand. Toshiba and KIOXIA part numbers look quite different.
What is the difference between ISE, SE and TCG Opal on this drive?
They are three security firmware builds of the same 1.92TB hardware, sold as different part numbers. This one, 0TS2525, is ISE — instant secure erase, which cryptographically wipes the drive on command. 0TS2516 is the SE model and 0TS2528 carries TCG Opal 2.01 self-encryption for key-managed environments. A drive cannot be converted from one to another, so the part number has to be right on the order.
Can I fit it in a normal server drive bay?
Only a U.2 or U.3 NVMe bay. A SAS or SATA backplane will not work with it, and the drive is 15 mm thick, so a 7 mm caddy is out even with the right cabling. If the server has no U.2 backplane, a PCIe host adapter is the alternative. Send us the chassis model and we will check.
Why would I cap the power below 20 W?
Because a full rack of 20 W drives adds up, in both power draw and heat. SanDisk lets you select 12, 14, 16, 18 or 20 W so the drive can be matched to what the enclosure can cool and what the per-slot power budget allows. You trade some throughput for it, but a throttling drive is slower than a correctly-capped one.
Singular Expert Insight
The SN861 sits at the read-intensive end of Gen5: 2.1 million random read IOPS with a modest 165,000 random write, and 1 DWPD endurance. That combination is deliberate — it is a drive for serving data, not for absorbing it. If the workload is write-heavy, the DWPD budget and the write IOPS both run out long before the read performance does, and a mixed-use drive such as Kingston’s DC3000ME is the better match at the same interface. Two things to plan for rather than discover. The selectable 12–20 W envelope is genuinely useful in a dense chassis, and worth setting deliberately rather than leaving at the 20 W default. And SanDisk publishes no TBW figure for this drive, only the 1 DWPD class, so if your procurement process wants a total-bytes-written number you will have to derive it. Note also that the security letter in the part number is permanent — ISE here, not Opal. Our full range is in enterprise and server SSDs, and storage controllers and adapter cards covers what a chassis needs to accept U.2 at all.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

Your server has a Gen5 U.2 or U.3 backplane and the workload is read-heavy. 13,700 MB/s and 2.1 million random read IOPS, with a selectable power envelope and instant secure erase for retirement.

Skip it if

The workload writes heavily — this is a 1 DWPD read-intensive drive with 165,000 random write IOPS. Skip it too if you need TCG Opal, which is a different part number, or if the chassis is SAS, SATA or 7 mm.

Also consider

The 0TS2528 variant if you need TCG Opal 2.01 rather than ISE. A mixed-use Gen5 U.2 drive such as the Kingston DC3000ME for write-heavy work. A U.2 host adapter card if the server has no U.2 backplane.
