WD Purple Pro 12TB Smart Video Hard Drive
12TBSATA 6 Gb/s7200 RPMUp to 64 HD cameras32 AI streams
The WD Purple Pro 12TB (part number WD122PURP) is a 3.5-inch surveillance hard drive that spins at 7200 RPM, carries a 512 MB cache and sustains up to 267 MB/s over SATA 6 Gb/s. Western Digital rates it for up to 64 high-definition camera streams with up to 32 of those running AI analytics, which is what separates the Pro line from the standard WD Purple. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.
Before you buy: this is a bare 3.5-inch internal drive with no screws, SATA cable or caddy in the box. It is tuned for continuous sequential video writes in an NVR or DVR, not for use as a boot disk. Confirm that your recorder supports 12TB drives, since many surveillance appliances have a firmware limit on maximum drive capacity.
Best For
✓ NVR and DVR recorders
AllFrame AI firmware reduces dropped frames and pixelation when many camera streams write to the same drive at once.
✓ AI-enabled video analytics
Rated for up to 32 concurrent AI streams alongside recording, so deep-learning NVRs can read back footage while still capturing.
✓ 24x7 continuous recording
A 550 TB per year workload rating covers systems that never stop writing, unlike a desktop drive.
✓ Multi-drive surveillance arrays
Rotational vibration sensors compensate for the vibration of neighbouring drives in a dense recorder chassis.
Key Features
AllFrame AI technology
Firmware tuned for the ATA streaming command set, which prioritises writing every frame in order rather than retrying reads the way a desktop drive would.
Up to 64 HD cameras
Western Digital rates the Purple Pro line for as many as 64 high-definition camera channels on a single drive.
32 concurrent AI streams
Enough headroom for a modern analytics NVR to run object and face detection while continuing to record.
550 TB per year workload
Ten times the annual read and write rating of a typical consumer desktop drive, sized for permanent recording.
Sustained 267 MB/s
Maximum sequential transfer rate over SATA 6 Gb/s, which is what matters for simultaneous multi-camera writes.
Rotational vibration sensors
Onboard sensors correct head position in real time, keeping throughput steady in multi-bay recorders.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the WD122PURP work with Hikvision, Dahua and UniFi Protect recorders?
Yes. It is a standard 3.5-inch SATA 6 Gb/s drive and fits any recorder with a SATA bay. Check your recorder documentation for the maximum supported capacity, because some older NVR models cannot address a drive of 12TB.
Is the WD122PURP suitable for use in a NAS instead?
It will work, but it is optimised for sequential video writes rather than the mixed random workload of a NAS. For a NAS, WD Red Pro is the better match; for a server, WD Gold.
What is the difference between WD Purple Pro and standard WD Purple?
Purple Pro spins at 7200 RPM, is rated to 550 TB per year and supports up to 64 cameras with 32 AI streams. Standard WD Purple runs at a lower spindle speed with a lower workload rating and fewer supported channels.
What do I need to know before buying the WD122PURP?
It is a bare internal drive with no cables, screws or caddy included. Surveillance footage is not backed up by the recorder, so keep a separate copy of anything you must retain.
Singular Expert Insight
For a recorder that never stops writing, the Purple Pro line earns its price through the AllFrame AI firmware rather than raw speed: it is tuned to keep writing frames in order instead of pausing to retry a read, which is exactly the behaviour that causes dropped frames on a desktop drive. If your NVR also runs analytics, the 32 AI stream rating is the specification to check against your camera count. Buyer's Guide
Buy this if
You run an NVR or DVR that records continuously from many cameras and you want firmware built for video rather than a general purpose drive.
Skip if
You need a general purpose NAS or desktop drive. WD Red Pro or WD Gold will handle mixed read and write workloads better.
Also consider
WD Red Pro for multi-bay NAS duty, WD Gold for enterprise servers, or a larger Purple Pro if your retention period keeps growing.
