The Zebra P1080383-223 is the genuine 300 dpi platen roller for the Zebra ZD420t and ZD620t thermal transfer desktop label printers, including the healthcare (-HC) versions.
The platen roller drives the labels under the printhead and presses them against it. A worn, cut or glazed roller causes faint or patchy print, labels that wander or slip, and skipping. Zebra designs it to be replaced by the user without tools.
Before you order: This is the 300 dpi roller for the thermal transfer (t) models. 203 dpi ZD420t/ZD620t printers need P1080383-222, and the direct thermal ZD420d uses P1080383-413 (203 dpi) or -414 (300 dpi). Check the dpi on your printer's label before ordering.

What It Means in Practice
- To swap it, open the printer, release the platen-bearing latch tabs and lift the old roller out.
- Slide the drive gear and the two bearings off the old shaft and onto the new roller, then refit it — Zebra sells replacement bearings separately as P1080383-224.
- Clean the new roller and the printhead with Zebra-approved cleaning material after fitting.
- Replacing the roller often fixes faint or uneven print that persists after cleaning.
What Will Not Work
- It does not fit 203 dpi ZD420t/ZD620t printers (P1080383-222).
- It does not fit the direct thermal ZD420d or ZD620d.
- It does not fit the newer ZD421t or ZD621t, which use P1112640-series rollers.
- It is not a printhead; it will not fix missing dot lines across the label.

Most platen roller problems come from labels with exposed adhesive or a roller damaged during cleaning. If cleaning does not restore print quality on a ZD420t or ZD620t, a new roller is the low-cost fix before considering a printhead.
