The Zebra ZE500-4 printhead kit is the genuine 203 dpi replacement printhead for the 4-inch ZE500-4 print engine, made for integrators and maintenance teams who keep print-and-apply lines running.
Zebra lists this one kit for both the right-hand (RH) and left-hand (LH) versions of the ZE500-4, so the mirror-image build of your engine does not change the part. At 203 dpi it gives you sharp barcodes and graphics at standard label sizes, the most common setting for shipping and pallet labels. It replaces a worn or damaged 203 dpi head like for like, keeping your existing label formats and print width unchanged.
Before you order: ZE500-4 only (right-hand and left-hand). The 6-inch ZE500-6 uses a different printhead.
What's in the Box
- One Zebra printhead kit, 203 dpi, for ZE500-4 RH and LH (quantity 1, as listed in the Zebra ZE500 Series parts catalog).
- Printhead cables (power, data, ground) are a separate Zebra kit (P1046696-007). Order it only if your existing cables are damaged.
What It Means in Practice
- Like-for-like swap: if your ZE500-4 already prints at 203 dpi, this is the head you need. Your label formats, darkness and print width stay as they are.
- Print width: 832 dots, which is 104 mm (4.09 in). Labels wider than that are not printed edge to edge on a ZE500-4.
- Works with both print methods the ZE500 supports: thermal transfer with ribbon, and direct thermal.
- When the engine shows WARNING REPLACE HEAD, Zebra's user guide says to replace the printhead and reset the head counter afterwards.
- Head life depends mostly on care: use ribbon at least as wide as the media (Zebra warns narrower ribbon wears the head early), keep the cleaning interval set to your roll length, and use Zebra certified supplies.
What Will Not Work
- ZE500-6 (6-inch engine): different printhead. Zebra lists P1004236 for the ZE500-6 at 203 dpi.
- Changing resolution: do not order this head to convert a 300 dpi engine to 203 dpi. Zebra sells dedicated conversion kits, and the right one depends on whether your engine has a standard or extended life media drive system. For this conversion that is P1046696-004 (standard life) or P1046696-141 (extended life).
- High-volume direct thermal lines: Zebra offers an Extended Life printhead (P1079036-005) for that use. If you print mostly direct thermal at high volume, ask us which one fits better before ordering.
- Newer ZE511 and ZE521 engines and Zebra desktop or ZT industrial printers: not listed for this part.

Most printhead failures on print-and-apply engines come from ribbon narrower than the label, too much darkness or pressure, and skipped cleaning. Fixing those three things often matters more than the head you buy. For cleaning supplies, ribbons and other label printer accessories, ask us when you order the head.
