How to choose the right cable accessories
- Keystone jacks. Match the category (Cat6 or Cat6A) and shielding (UTP or STP) to your cable. Tool-less jacks need no punch-down tool; LSA/IDC jacks need one.
- Faceplates and boxes. Keystone jacks fit any keystone faceplate, surface box or patch panel, but faceplate sizes differ. Check the size of your wall box (for example 86 × 86 mm or 45 × 45 mm modular) before ordering.
- Couplers join two patch cables. Use the same category and shielding as the cables, and keep to one coupler per link.
- RJ-45 plugs are made for solid or stranded cable and for a range of wire sizes. Check your cable type. Pass-through plugs need a matching crimping tool.
- Cable ties. Choose releasable ties if you will change the cabling later, and black UV-resistant ties for outdoor use. Velcro straps are kinder to network cables because they do not crush them.
- Fibre adapters and connectors must match the connector (SC or LC), the fibre type (single-mode or multimode) and simplex or duplex.
- Dust covers protect unused RJ-45, USB, DisplayPort and audio ports in dusty or public areas.
