How to choose the right serial cable
- Straight-through or null modem. A PC to a device such as a modem, scale or printer usually needs a straight-through cable. Two computers, or two devices of the same type, usually need a null modem cable. The device manual says which one.
- Check both ends. Note DB-9 or DB-25 and male or female on each side. A gender changer or DB-9 to DB-25 adapter fixes a mismatch.
- No COM port on the PC? Use a USB to serial adapter (USB-A or USB-C). Models with an FTDI chipset have the widest driver support on Windows, macOS and Linux. Multi-port versions are available for 2 or 4 devices.
- RS-232 is not RS-422/485. They use the same plug but different signals. Industrial equipment on RS-422 or RS-485 needs a matching adapter, often with a terminal block.
- Console ports. Cisco and most network equipment use an RJ-45 console port with a rollover cable. For a laptop, a USB to RJ-45 console cable is the simplest choice.
- Device-specific cables for Datalogic, Honeywell, Zebra, Epson and similar scanners and printers fit only the models they are listed for.
- Length. RS-232 is reliable up to about 15 m. For longer runs consider RS-485.
- Motherboard header brackets. The 10-pin header layout differs between boards, so check the board manual before ordering.
