Video splitters send one HDMI or DisplayPort source to two, four or eight screens at the same time — for shop windows, meeting rooms, classrooms and digital signage — plus DisplayPort and USB-C MST hubs that drive several monitors as one extended desktop. Splitter or MST hub — which do I need?
- HDMI splitter — every screen shows the same picture. Choose the number of outputs (1×2, 1×4, 1×8) and make sure it supports your resolution: 4K at 30 Hz (HDMI 1.4), 4K at 60 Hz HDR (HDMI 2.0) or 8K (HDMI 2.1).
- Downscaler — lets a 4K source feed a mix of 4K and older 1080p screens; without it, all screens may drop to the lowest resolution or stay black.
- MST hub (DisplayPort / USB-C) — each monitor shows different content (extended desktop). Works on Windows with DisplayPort 1.2 or later; macOS does not support MST and shows the same picture on all screens.
- Y-splitter cables are passive and do not duplicate the signal like a powered splitter — for two working screens, choose a powered splitter.
Good to know: for long distances to the screens, combine the splitter with HDMI extenders; to choose between several sources on one screen you need a video switch, not a splitter.
