Video switchers connect several sources — PCs, laptops, consoles, media players or cameras — to one screen or projector and let you choose which one is shown. HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 switches with remote control, bi-directional switches, matrix switches and multiviewers, from Lindy, StarTech.com, Club 3D, Equip, Delock, Digitus and other brands.
Which video switch do I need?
- Switch (many in → 1 out) — choose the number of inputs (2, 3, 4 or 5). Models with a remote or auto-switching select the active source for you.
- Resolution — HDMI 2.0 switches handle 4K at 60 Hz HDR; for consoles and gaming monitors at 4K 120 Hz or 8K, choose an HDMI 2.1 (48 Gbps) switch.
- Bi-directional switch — works as 2 → 1 or 1 → 2, but shows only one output at a time; to feed two screens simultaneously you need a splitter.
- Matrix switch — any input to any output (for example 4×2), independently — ideal for meeting rooms with a screen and a projector. Multiviewer — shows several sources on one screen at once.
Good to know: a video switch changes only the picture (and sound). To control several computers with one keyboard and mouse, you need a KVM switch. If you use a soundbar or amplifier, choose a switch with eARC or audio extraction.
