The Cisco SFP-10/25G-LR-S= is a dual-rate SFP28 transceiver that runs 10 Gbps or 25 Gbps over single-mode fibre, up to 10 km at either speed. The “=” suffix is Cisco’s spare part, ordered separately from a switch. It suits data-centre and campus links on Cisco switches with SFP28 ports, where one optic covers today’s 10G link and tomorrow’s 25G upgrade. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
At 25G Cisco states that this module requires RS-FEC on the host port — a port without it will not bring the 25G link up. It needs single-mode fibre with standard PC-polished LC cords; APC patch cords are not supported. Both ends must run the same speed. Don’t confuse it with SFP-10/25G-CSR-S, the multimode version, or SFP-10/25G-LR-I, the industrial-temperature version. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
