The Cisco QSFP-40G-SR4-S= is the S-class version of Cisco’s 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ transceiver: the same 850 nm MPO-12 multimode optics, reaching 100 m on OM3 and 150 m on OM4/OM5, for plain 40G Ethernet links between Cisco switches. It drops the features most data rooms do not use — breakout, FCoE and OM2 support. In practice, multimode optics are the cheaper choice for links inside one building: most server rooms and floor risers already carry OM3 or OM4 fibre, and the module plus a short LC patch cord is all a port needs. Before you order, check the fibre grade printed on the cable jacket and the real length of the run, including patch panels.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Cisco states that this module does not support 4×10G breakout and does not support FCoE. If you need to split a 40G port into four 10G links, order the QSFP-40G-SR4= instead. It needs an MPO-12 trunk and will not plug into duplex LC cabling. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Frequently Asked Questions

Can I break it out to four 10G ports?
No. Cisco states that QSFP-40G-SR4-S does not support 4×10G breakout. Use the QSFP-40G-SR4= for that.
Will it link to a standard QSFP-40G-SR4?
Both are 40GBASE-SR4 on MPO-12 multimode; Cisco lists them with the same optical specification. Check your switch and release in the TMG matrix.
Are fibre patch cords included?
No. You get 1 module. The MPO-12 patch cord, a matching module for the far end of the link and a fibre cleaning tool are bought separately. Tell us the distance and the fibre type and we quote the right cord.
Will it work in a switch from another brand?
Cisco modules carry Cisco Quality ID coding, and Cisco’s installation notes say to use only Cisco transceivers in Cisco devices. Support is confirmed per host model and software release in the Cisco TMG matrix. Cisco does not publish operation in other brands’ switches, so we do not promise it — send us the model and we check it.
