The StarTech.com GLCLXSMRGDST is a rugged Gigabit SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 10 km at 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection, rated for −40 to 85 °C. It is programmed as a Cisco GLC-LX-SM-RGD, so Cisco industrial and edge platforms such as the IE 2000, IE 4000 and ASR 920 accept it, and it supports digital diagnostics. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs single-mode fibre and an LX/LH module at the far end — it will not work over multimode fibre. It is coded as the Cisco rugged part; if your switch sits in an air-conditioned room, a commercial-temperature LX optic does the same job. For multimode runs inside an industrial site, Cisco uses the GLC-SX-MM-RGD. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
