The StarTech.com J9151E-ST is a 10 Gbit SFP+ transceiver coded to work as the HPE Aruba J9151E, the current revision of HPE’s 10GBASE-LR optic. It runs at 1310 nm over single-mode fibre with an LC duplex connector, reaches up to 10 km and supports digital diagnostics. It suits HPE Aruba networks linking buildings and floors on switches such as the 2930F, 3810M, 5400R and CX 8325. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It is coded as the J9151E revision — HPE states the CX 8325 accepts only J9151E or later, so older J9151A/D-coded optics are not a substitute there. It needs single-mode fibre and a 10GBASE-LR module at the far end; for multimode runs choose an SR module such as the J9150A-ST. It will not link to an 850 nm SR optic. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
