Two things decide whether this is the right cable. First the wiring: this is a null modem (crossover) cable, for connecting two DTE devices to each other. If you are connecting a DTE to a DCE — a PC to an actual modem — you need a straight-through serial cable instead. Second the gender: this one is female to male, and DB-9 serial ports come in both genders depending on the equipment, so check the port before ordering rather than after. It carries RS-232 signalling on a standard DB-9 (9-pin D-Sub) connector.
