StarTech.com DB9 RS232 Serial Null Modem Cable — 2 m, female to male, Shielded

Null-modem wiringDB-9 F/M, RS-232Moulded strain reliefLifetime warranty

The StarTech.com DB9 RS232 Serial Null Modem Cable, product ID SCNM9FM2MBK, is a 2 m black DB-9 female to male serial cable wired as a null modem. That wiring is the whole point: the transmit and receive lines are crossed inside the cable, so two DTE devices — two computers, a laptop and a switch console port, a PC and an instrument — can talk to each other directly without a modem between them. A straight-through serial cable in the same position does nothing at all, which is the single most common reason a serial link refuses to come up. It uses 7 conductors at 28 AWG with high-quality shielding against EMI and fully moulded connectors with strain relief. StarTech.com backs it with a lifetime warranty. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Two things decide whether this is the right cable. First the wiring: this is a null modem (crossover) cable, for connecting two DTE devices to each other. If you are connecting a DTE to a DCE — a PC to an actual modem — you need a straight-through serial cable instead. Second the gender: this one is female to male, and DB-9 serial ports come in both genders depending on the equipment, so check the port before ordering rather than after. It carries RS-232 signalling on a standard DB-9 (9-pin D-Sub) connector. Note that modern laptops have no serial port at all; pairing this with a USB-to-serial adapter is the usual arrangement, and in that case the adapter’s own gender and wiring have to be accounted for too. Operating range is -20 °C to 80 °C (-4 °F to 176 °F) at 15–65% RH.
Key Features

Null-modem wiring, crossed TX and RX
The cable does the crossover so you do not have to. Connecting two DTE devices requires transmit on one end to reach receive on the other, and this is the standard, reliable way to achieve it — far better than an adapter stack that introduces two more connector pairs to go intermittent.

DB-9 female to male connectors
Serial gender is not standardised across equipment, and getting it wrong means a trip back to the supplier or an ugly gender changer in the middle of the run. This is the female to male configuration; check your two ports before you order.

Shielding against EMI
Serial links are often run in exactly the places electrical noise lives: plant rooms, machine cabinets, comms racks. Shielding is what keeps a low-speed RS-232 link from picking up framing errors that look like a device fault and are actually a cable fault.

Fully moulded connectors with strain relief
Serial cables spend their lives half-attached to something being moved. The moulded shell takes the pull rather than the solder joints inside the connector, which is where an unmoulded cable fails first and most annoyingly.

7 conductors at 28 AWG
Enough conductors for data plus the common handshake lines, which matters for equipment that expects hardware flow control. 28 AWG is the standard gauge for a serial data cable at this length.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a null modem cable and do I need one?
It is a serial cable with the transmit and receive lines crossed. RS-232 was designed for a computer (DTE) to talk to a modem (DCE), so two computers connected with a straight cable both transmit on the same pin and nothing happens. A null modem swaps them. If both ends of your link are computers, switches, PLCs or instruments, you need this; if one end is a modem, you need a straight-through cable.
Which gender do I need?
Look at the port, not the equipment type — there is no reliable convention. A DB-9 port with visible pins is male and needs a female connector; a port with holes is female and needs a male connector. This cable is female to male. Ordering the wrong gender is the most common mistake with serial cables.
Can I use it for a switch or router console port?
That depends on the device. Some network equipment uses a DB-9 console port that expects a null modem cable, and many use RJ-45 console ports with a proprietary rollover cable instead. Check the equipment manual: it will state whether the console connection is straight-through or crossover, and this cable covers the crossover DB-9 case.
My laptop has no serial port. What do I do?
Use a USB-to-serial adapter, which is how virtually all serial work is done now. Just remember the adapter has its own gender and its own wiring, so plan the whole chain — adapter, this cable, target device — rather than each piece in isolation. A gender changer or a straight cable in the middle undoes the crossover.
Singular Expert Insight
Serial refuses to die because too much long-lived equipment depends on it: switches and routers with console ports, PLCs, UPS units, industrial controllers, scientific instruments, point-of-sale hardware. The two things that go wrong are always the same, and neither is subtle once you know them. The first is wiring — null modem versus straight-through — and if you get it wrong the link is simply dead, with no error to diagnose. The second is gender, which is not standardised and cannot be inferred from the device type. Check both against the two ports you are joining before ordering, and serial is a reliable, boringly dependable interface. The build quality worth having is the shielding and the moulded strain relief, because serial cables live in noisy cabinets and get pulled sideways. Browse our network switches range for the console-managed hardware this typically connects to, and see our routers section for other managed devices.
Buyer's Guide

Buy it if

You are joining two DTE serial devices — a PC to a console port, an instrument, a PLC or another computer — and both ports match a female to male DB-9 connection.

Skip it if

One end of the link is a modem or other DCE device, which needs a straight-through serial cable, or your ports call for the opposite gender.

Also consider

Straight-through DB9 serial cables for DTE-to-DCE connections, USB-to-serial adapters for laptops with no serial port, or the opposite-gender version of this same null modem cable.
