How to choose the right IP camera
- Home or business system. Home cameras (Tapo, Imou, eufy) work with a phone app, microSD card and optional cloud. Business systems (TP-Link VIGI, Hikvision, UniFi Protect, AXIS) record to an NVR and are managed centrally. Stay in one family for full features; ONVIF gives basic compatibility between brands.
- PoE, Wi-Fi or battery. PoE cameras take power and data through one network cable and are the most reliable. Wi-Fi cameras need a power socket and a good signal. Battery, solar and 4G models suit places without cables.
- Resolution and lens. 4 MP is a good balance for most spaces; 4K adds detail for car parks and large areas. A 2.8 mm lens covers a wide area close up; 4–6 mm lenses see further but narrower.
- Shape. Bullets are visible and reach far. Turrets and domes are discreet, and vandal-resistant (IK10) domes suit public areas. Pan-tilt and PTZ cameras turn to follow movement.
- Night vision. Infrared gives black-and-white images in the dark. Full-colour models use a built-in light or high-sensitivity sensor for colour at night.
- Analogue is different. Turbo HD / HD-TVI cameras are not IP cameras; they need coaxial cable and a DVR, not an NVR.
- Privacy. In Cyprus and the EU, cameras that record staff, customers or public space fall under GDPR. Place signs and point cameras at your own property.
