How to choose the right router
- Start from your internet connection. Fibre and cable connections usually come with the provider's modem or fibre terminal, and your router connects to it by Ethernet. A phone-line (VDSL) connection needs a router with a built-in VDSL modem, or you keep the provider's modem. Mobile internet needs a 4G or 5G router with a SIM slot.
- 4G/5G routers. Check that the router is unlocked and supports your provider's bands. Outdoor 4G/5G units help where the signal indoors is weak.
- WAN speed. For internet faster than 1 Gbps, choose a router with a 2.5 GbE WAN port; otherwise the port limits the speed.
- Coverage. One router covers a flat or small office. For a larger house, a mesh system (several units working as one network) gives even coverage. For offices and hotels, a router plus access points scales better.
- Business features. VPN routers such as TP-Link Omada ER, DrayTek Vigor, UniFi gateways and ASUS ExpertWiFi add site-to-site and remote-access VPN, a second internet line for failover, and separate networks (VLANs) for staff and guests. For deeper protection, see firewalls.
- Travel routers turn a hotel or public connection into your own private Wi-Fi network for all your devices.
