How to choose a handheld terminal
- Form factor. All-touch models (Zebra TC5x, Honeywell CT40/CT60) feel like a smartphone and suit retail and deliveries. Keypad models (MC3x00) are faster for constant data entry. Gun-grip models (MC9x00) suit heavy scanning in warehouses. Wearables (WS50) leave both hands free.
- Scan range. Standard range scanners read at arm's length; long range or extended range engines read labels on high racks. Choose by the furthest label you need to scan.
- Connectivity. Wi-Fi only for in-house use; WWAN (4G/5G) with SIM for drivers and field staff. Check that the Android version is still supported by your software vendor.
- Environment. Look at drop, tumble and IP ratings; cold storage models have heated displays and batteries for freezers.
- Plan the accessories. Terminals usually come without a cradle or charger. Add spare batteries, single or multi-slot cradles, holsters and protective boots for your exact model from terminal accessories; they differ between series.
