Next-generation firewalls and security appliances for offices and branches: Zyxel USG FLEX, Cisco Firepower and Secure Firewall, Allied Telesis and LANCOM, from compact desktop units to 1U rackmount and industrial models, with intrusion prevention, web filtering, application control and VPN.
How to choose the right firewall
- Firewall or router? A router connects your network to the internet. A next-generation firewall also inspects the traffic: intrusion prevention, web and content filtering, application control, anti-malware and secure VPN for remote staff and branch offices.
- Size by real throughput. Datasheets show high "firewall" figures; the number that matters is the throughput with threat protection (IPS) and inspection turned on, which is much lower. Size it to your internet speed, number of users and VPN connections.
- Security licences. Protection features run on subscriptions. Bundles include them for a period; plan for renewal. Without a licence the unit still routes and firewalls, but the advanced protection stops updating.
- Ports. Check WAN and LAN ports, 2.5G or 10G for fast fibre connections, and SFP for fibre uplinks. A second WAN gives failover to a backup line.
- Cisco software. Cisco models ship with ASA or Firepower Threat Defense (TD) software, managed differently. Choose the version that matches your IT team's tools.
- Industrial sites use hardened units such as Cisco ISA3000 on DIN rail.
