Network switches for homes, offices, server rooms and industrial sites: unmanaged plug-and-play switches, smart and fully managed switches, PoE switches for cameras, phones and access points, 2.5G and 10G multi-gig models, and DIN-rail industrial switches. From TP-Link, TRENDnet, D-Link, Netgear, Zyxel, LevelOne, Ubiquiti, HPE Aruba and Cisco.
How to choose the right network switch
- Number of ports. Count the devices you need to connect today and add 20–30% for growth, plus a port for the uplink to your router or main switch.
- Speed. Gigabit suits most offices. Choose 2.5 GbE ports for Wi-Fi 6/7 access points and fast NAS, and 10 GbE or SFP+ uplinks for servers and links between switches.
- Unmanaged, smart or managed. Unmanaged switches work out of the box. Smart switches add VLANs and QoS through a web page, useful to separate guests, phones and cameras. Fully managed and Layer 3 switches add advanced security, routing and stacking. Cloud-managed lines (Omada, UniFi, Zyxel Nebula, Aruba Instant On) are configured from one app with your access points.
- Power over Ethernet. PoE (802.3af, up to 15.4 W per port) powers phones and simple cameras; PoE+ (802.3at, 30 W) powers most access points and PTZ cameras; PoE++ (802.3bt, 60–90 W) powers high-end access points and displays. Add up the devices and check the switch's total PoE budget.
- SFP ports take fibre or DAC modules for long distances and fast uplinks. Transceivers are sold separately, see SFP transceivers.
- Size and noise. Desktop switches suit desks and small cabinets; 19" rackmount switches fit racks. Fanless models are silent for offices. Industrial switches mount on DIN rail and handle wide temperatures.
