Fibre optic patch cables, couplers, pigtails, splice boxes and installation cable for LAN backbones, server rooms, data centres and FTTH — single-mode OS2 and multimode OM3, OM4 and OM5, with LC, SC, ST and MPO connectors. From Equip, Digitus, StarTech.com, Lindy, Good Connections, Intellinet and other brands.
Which fibre cable do I need?
- Single-mode (OS2, yellow, 9/125 µm) — long distances, from hundreds of metres to many kilometres: building-to-building links and FTTH. Multimode (50/125 µm) — inside buildings and data centres: OM3 (aqua) about 300 m and OM4 about 400 m at 10 Gbps; OM5 (lime green) for SWDM.
- Match the transceiver. The cable type must match the SFP module or media converter (single-mode or multimode) — the two cannot be mixed.
- Connectors — LC (small, used on most SFP modules and switches), SC (larger, common in FTTH and older equipment), ST (bayonet, legacy) and MPO/MTP (many fibres in one plug, for 40/100G).
- UPC or APC — UPC connectors are usually blue (single-mode) or beige/aqua (multimode); APC connectors are green and angled, common in FTTH and GPON. Never connect UPC to APC.
- Duplex or simplex — most switch-to-switch links need a duplex cable (two fibres); simplex is for BiDi transceivers and FTTH.
Good to know: dust on a fibre connector causes signal loss — keep the dust caps on and clean connectors before plugging in. TOSLINK optical audio cables in this category are for audio equipment, not for networks.
