Network video recorders (NVR) and video servers for camera systems: 4 to 64-channel NVRs, NVRs with built-in PoE for plug-and-play cameras, rackmount recorders, video encoders that bring analogue cameras onto the network, decoders for video walls, and AXIS Camera Station servers. From TP-Link VIGI, Hikvision, Ubiquiti UniFi Protect, AXIS and LevelOne.
How to choose the right NVR
- NVR or DVR. An NVR records IP cameras over the network. Analogue and HD-TVI cameras need a DVR, or a video encoder to bring them onto an IP system.
- Channels and resolution. Choose enough channels for today's cameras plus room to grow. Check the maximum resolution per camera (for example 8 MP or 12 MP) and the total incoming bandwidth.
- Built-in PoE. NVRs with PoE ports power and connect cameras directly, which keeps small installations simple. For larger sites or long cable runs, use a separate PoE switch.
- Storage. Many NVRs ship without a hard drive. Use surveillance-rated drives and plan capacity: as a guide, one 4 MP camera recording continuously in H.265 uses roughly 20–40 GB per day. Motion-only recording and H.265+ extend the time.
- Stay with one brand. Cameras and NVRs of the same brand give full features such as smart detection and two-way audio. ONVIF provides basic compatibility between brands.
- Larger systems. Rackmount recorders with RAID and video management software such as AXIS Camera Station scale to many cameras and sites; check the licences needed per camera.
