How to choose a barcode scanner
- 1D or 2D. 1D (linear or laser) scanners read classic product barcodes (EAN, UPC, Code 128). Choose 2D if you also need QR codes, GS1 DataMatrix on medicines, codes on phone screens or damaged labels.
- Corded or wireless. USB scanners work as a keyboard (keyboard wedge), so most POS and ERP software needs no driver. Cordless models connect through their own base (2.4 GHz or 433 MHz) or by Bluetooth directly to a tablet or phone; check the range and battery life.
- Handheld or hands-free. Presentation and counter scanners read items passed in front of them, which speeds up a busy checkout. Many handhelds come with a stand for both uses.
- Environment. For warehouses and loading bays choose industrial models with a high drop and IP rating; healthcare models have disinfectant-ready housings.
- Kit or scanner only. Some part numbers include the cable and stand ("kit"), others are the scanner alone. Check the description, and get cables, stands and cradles for your exact model from scanner accessories.
